What to expect
Philosophy & Diagnosis
Chinese Medicine takes a wide view of the body, mind, and spirit. Dr. Berusch will check pulses on both sides of your wrists which coordinate to organ systems, look at your tongue, and ask about diet, exercise, and lifestyle to develop a unique treatment plan that promotes balance and harmony in one's life.
Preparing for a visit
Clothing
Wear loose fitting clothing or clothing that can easily be moved around for access to acupuncture points on the body that may be on the thigh, belly, chest, lower leg, or back. You can also disrobe at your visit if you’re unable to change into loose fitting clothing.
Food & Drink
Drink some water and have a light snack before your acupuncture appointment.
After your appointment
Continue to hydrate by drinking water as you normally would. Try to have some space in your day to relax and unwind. You may realize you want to relax, so if you’re able, make space in your schedule for that on days when you receive acupuncture treatment.
General concerns
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture doesn’t hurt in the ways a blood draw or a shot does. An acupuncture treatment is usually gentle and relaxing. I choose acupuncture points on the body specific to areas of pain, symptoms, or organ systems that need support. During needle insertion you might feel increased awareness in the area or a dull ache that usually goes away. If the discomfort persists in a way that does not allow for you to relax, we can adjust the treatment and remove the acupuncture needle. It is common for people to feel very calm and sleepy after an acupuncture appointment.
I am afraid of needles
It is common for people to have a fear of needles and pain. Fortunately, acupuncture is usually painless and even alleviates or reduces pain. The needles are very thin, thinner than the width of a single strand of hair. If you’re feeling nervous, we can move at a slow pace; Talk about acupuncture, look at needles together, and discuss treatment alternatives that do not use needles or penetrate the skin, like the use of acupressure, acupuncture seeds, stimulating points with flower essences or essential oils. We will move at your pace.
